PASCO -- Wesco was well represented by the Class 4A girls at Saturday's state meet with the Jackson Timberwolves placing sixth and the Snohomish Panthers placing seventh respectively.
Jackson finished behind Snohomish at the league meet and the Kingco/Wesco bi-district meet, but finally surpassed the Panthers at state. The Timberwolves finished with 183 points and Snohomish had 199.
"That was a big moral victory," Jackson's girls head coach Alan Briggs said. "We respect Snohomish. We know they have a talented group and they have had our number all year and we were hoping that we could run with them and beat them today."
Briggs said he was also pleased with where the team placed.
"I thought we ran really well," Briggs said. The teams that were ahead of us are incredibly fast teams.
"To say we are the sixth best team in the state is pretty special," Briggs added.
Much of the Timberwolves team success this season has been due to freshman Brooke Kingma. Once again on Saturday she led the way for Jackson finishing 14th in 18 minutes, 50 seconds.
"For a freshman, Brooke has been our leader and our strongest runner all year," Briggs said. "She has come in and been our number one runner all year and today was no exception. She had an excellent race.
Freshman Bri Gibson was Snohomish's highest finisher in 37th place with a time of 19:25.
"She is such a savvy racer," Snohomish head coach David LeWarne said. "Bri kind of got in the pack today and moved up like she does.
"It's always fun to watch her race because she is just so gritty.
LeWarne said his team was consistent with where they have been.
"They went OK," LeWarne said. "I think we were consistent with where we have been for a lot of the season. To come over here after last year not qualifying as team and performing like they did is really consistent with the way they have been running, which is good because this is quite a stage to perform well on."
Stanwood's Jordin Stephenson was the highest local finisher in 10th place with a time of 18:44. Stephenson helped Stanwood finish 12th as a team with 287 points.
2A girls
Lakewood's Rachel Cundy placed 15th in 19:17. Cundy was the only local runner to place in the top 38 finishers. Archbishop Murphy's Michaela Bartz finished 39th in 19:56.
Despite not having a runner in the top 40, Cedarcrest finished fifth as a team.
1A girls
Kacey Kemper of King's finished fourth with a time of 18:41, helping the Knights earn a fourth-place finish as a team.
