EVERETT — Exciting things are happening at the Imagine Children’s Museum.
An expansion is nearly finished that will add 7,500 square feet to the nonprofit museum.
By early next year, children should be able to explore a space designed to resemble a Northwest lodge. The multipurpose pavilion will enable the museum to host traveling exhibits and special events as well as serve more people.
The more than $1 million expansion was paid for with donations from the community.
The museum is open during the expansion work.
The first special exhibit to visit is already selected: spinning tops and blocks.
The plans call for a stage for performances, two family restrooms, storage and a workshop to fix the things that will inevitably get broken.
Friday afternoon, workers were busy lining a wall with river rock and hanging light fixtures, including a chandelier made of fabricated metal trees. Hand-hewn wood pillars and a gigantic fireplace were already installed. A staircase looked as if it had been cut from a gigantic stump.
“It’s amazing,” said Nancy Johnson, executive director of the museum. “It’s been moving fast. We just know the families are going to love it.”
