Luckily for the Kamiak Knights and the Meadowdale Mavericks it was the first game of the season.
The Knights defeated the Mavs 46-37 on Tuesday night, but neither team could claim to be at mid-season form.
Those in attendance certainly did not get a game heavy in offensive firepower, both teams struggled with the ball, especially from the perimeter.
“You know we didn’t shoot the ball well tonight,” Meadowdale coach Andy Streit said. “We are going to need to shoot the ball well to be successful, that is one of our strengths.”
The Mavericks nine-point loss wasn’t helped by putting up four points in both the second and fourth quarters.
Some of the Mavericks struggles might have been due to a solid performance by the Kamiak defense.
“Defense is always going to be our thing,” Kamiak coach Cory West said.
But, with all the offensive firepower the Knights have offense should be their thing as well.
But not on Tuesday.
Kamiak was led offensively by Anthony Berg, who scored 17 points and grabbed 15 of Kamiak’s 45 rebounds. The Mavericks finished with 35 rebounds.
The defense and rebounding of the Knights were good sign if you are a Kamiak fan, but the offense will have to improve if the team is going to live up to some of its early season expectations.
And for the Mavericks, Streit was seemed encouraged that his team stayed with Kamiak for most of the game.
“I learned that we battled a really good team,” Streit said. “That we respond to adversity and we make our adjustments that we talk about.”
