Lanes closed at night on I-5 in Smokey Point

At least one inside lane on I-5 in the Smokey Point area will be closed nearly every weeknight for three weeks for work on the 156th Street NE overpass project.

This week, except Friday, the southbound left-hand lane will be closed overnight for the project, located about a mile south of the interchange at I-5 and 172nd Street NE. The closures began Monday night.

No closures are scheduled for Friday (Dec. 9), Monday (Dec. 12) or Dec. 23.

The $13 million project involves building a bridge over I-5 at 156th Street NE to connect Smokey Point Boulevard east of I-5 to Twin Lakes Boulevard and the Lakewood Crossing shopping center on the west side of the freeway.

The project is scheduled for completion next August.

From Dec. 13-15, the two left lanes in the southbound direction will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., , according to Pat Gruenhagen, who is managing the project for the city.

Those two lanes also will be closed at the same times Dec. 19-22, as will the left lane on the northbound side, Gruenhagen said.

Crews are scheduled to move heavy machinery and equipment into the median from Dec. 13-15 and begin drilling work for the bridge shafts the following week.
