Dinner and a show at Taproot
The menu featured pork and chicken. The billing promoted Booth Tarkington’s “Beasley’s Christmas Party.”
A low-keyed dinner paved the way for a feel-good holiday comedy last Wednesday when Taproot teamed with the nearby The Upper Crust. Together, the two made for a Northwest theatergoers dream night out: nothing fancy, no hustle, no hoopla; just a solid, down to earth, get real, plain, good time.
True, I could have done with less Risotto and Basil Cream with my New England Seared Chicken Breast and Smoked Bacon.
But the Pan Seared Green Beans with Caramelized Onions and Roasted Peppers were delicious; and the Olive Bread, to write home about.
Plus, the Dickens Carolers a-caroling during Old Fashioned Ginger Bread Cake for dessert set a receptive mood. Everyone was ready for “Beasley’s Christmas Party;” Wainwright, Indiana, 1909.
This is a cast of four in multiple roles portraying folks in small town U.S.A. Life and the values people live by are simple, and everybody knows everybody else’s business.
Beasley is a politician running for re-election and sure to hold office because for years he has been getting things done. Lately, however, Beasley’s been spotted talking to people and dogs only he can see.
Yikes! Is the old guy losing his marbles? Beasley is a decent man but we are talking public office. Disgrace threatens.
Frank Lawler, Don Brady, Lisa Peretti and Aaron Lamb ham it up, shape shifting from character to character, sometimes in the blink of an eye.
Admittedly, there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek, a little good-natured satire and definitely nothing cutting edge.
But Scott Nolte’s directing keep things moving in the right direction; and the humor, of the kind you pretty much savor quietly.
“Beasley’s” Christmastime sparkle put the finishing touches on the entire evening’s traditional, Hallmark glow. Call me hokey. It worked for me.
