WHIDBEY ISLAND — A small plane crashed just after 4 p.m. Thursday on the west side of Whidbey Island, south of Coupeville, killing one person.

The Piper Arrow was headed to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island when it crashed, base spokeswoman Kimberly Martin said. Only the pilot was aboard.

The crash happened near the intersection of Ebeys Landing Road & Hill Road, Martin said.
Martin said the pilot was a civilian member of the Whidbey Island Navy Flying Club, a recreation program at the naval air station.

Naval Air Station police and fire officials were on scene. The National Transportation Safety Board also was notified.
