Monroe students place in essay contest

Students in the Monroe School District recently wrote essays for the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay contest.

Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders answered the question "What is an American?" in their essays while the subject for middle school students in this year's contest was "Are you proud of your country?"

The Washington State Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest started in 1981. Since then, a national essay contest has also been developed for grades six through eight. More than 300 Monroe students entered this year's contest.

Grade level winning entries advancing to the countywide contest were written by:

Lariat Shuey, third grade, Chain Lake Elementary.

Celia Teague, fourth grade, Chain Lake Elementary.

Nicole Martin, fifth grade, Maltby Elementary.

Tyler Tuttle, sixth grade, Park Place Middle School.

Trevor Windsor, seventh grade, Hidden River Middle School.

Jacob O'Malley, eighth grade, Park Place Middle School.

Grade level winners will now move up to compete at the district level with District 1 Veterans of Foreign Wars, which represents most of Snohomish County. First place district winners will advance to the state level of competition with the Department of Washington VFW early next year.
