Fatal crash closes Highway 92 in Lake Stevens area

LAKE STEVENS -- One person was killed in a wreck Tuesday afternoon on Highway 92 in the Lake Stevens area. The investigation closed the highway for hours as police investigated.

The accident was reported about 3:30 p.m. where the highway crosses N. Machias Road, said Trooper Keith Leary with the Washington State Patrol.

A Toyota sport utility vehicle was eastbound on the highway approaching the intersection when a Chrysler passenger car attempted to turn left into the westbound lanes, Leary said.

The cars collided, and the Chrysler's driver died at the scene. His age and hometown were not immediately available. A passenger in his car, 39, was hospitalized with injuries that weren't expected to be life-threatening.

The SUV driver also had injuries that weren't expected to be life-threatening.

Additional details were not available Tuesday evening.
