Front Porch: Volunteer firefighters wanted on Camano Island
Firefighters sought
Camano Island needs more volunteer firefighters.
Most of the country is protected by volunteer firefighters, Camano Island Assistant Fire Chief Levon Yengoyan said.
The island was served by all volunteers until the district hired its first paid firefighter in 1991. Now 35 volunteers work alongside 50 full- and part-time firefighters.
For new volunteers, training includes 140 hours of firefighting, hazardous materials, first aid and CPR training, and another 120 hours to become emergency medical technicians.
In a recent survey of Camano's volunteers, "service to the community" was overwhelmingly the primary reason people serve as volunteer firefighters.
Toxic algae warning: The city of Lake Stevens reports that blue-green algae blooms are in the county's largest lake.
The blooms are potentially toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Signs have been posted at Lake Stevens and city officials distributed fliers to lakefront residents.

Free film for kids at Olympic: "The Smurfs" is this year's free movie for kids at the Olympic Theater in downtown Arlington.
Offered by the city of Arlington, an anonymous donor and the theater, the annual winter break movie usually packs in crowds.
Show times are 1 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday at the theater, 107 N. Olympic Ave.
