Tugboat captain from Bainbridge dies after Mexico beating

BREMERTON -- A Bainbridge Island tugboat captain from Washington state has died from injuries suffered during a Christmas day beating in Mexico.

The Kitsap Sun reports that 46-year-old Patrick Warga died Tuesday in a San Diego hospital.

Warga was in Tampico, Mexico, for his job with Foss Maritime. He and a shipmate attended a Christmas Eve service at a church in town and then opted to spend the night at a hotel because it was unsafe for them to return to the shipyard after dark.

On Christmas morning, before returning to the ship, Warga went out for a cup of tea. That's when he was robbed and attacked.

Warga is survived by his wife and their three children.
