Poll finds voters unlikely to repeal a same-sex marriage law

The Washington Poll today released more details of an October survey that show voters may not be willing to repeal a law legalizing marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

When a summary of results of the statewide survey first came out, it showed only 43 percent of those queried endorsed legalizing gay marriage while 22 percent said gay and lesbian couples should enjoy the same rights and benefits of married couples but it should not be called marriage.

Details released this morning focus in on what voters might do in the event a law is passed and they are asked to repeal it.

It found 55 percent would vote to retain the law and 38 percent would vote to repeal.

Drilling deeper, the new findings released today show 54 percent of self-described Independents and 57 percent of self-described moderates support same sex marriage. It also found overwhelming backing (65 percent) from those age 18-40.
