Steelhead season to close Feb. 1 on Snohomish, Stillaguamish rivers
OLYMPIA -- The winter steelhead season on several Western Washington rivers is going to close early.
The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced late last week that fishing for steelhead and other game fish will close Feb. 1 on the Snohomish, Stillaguamish, Skagit and Nooksack river systems. The Puyallup River system closes Jan. 16.
The rivers are closing because the numbers of returning wild steelhead are "far short of target levels," Bob Leland, the state's steelhead program manager, said on the Department of Fish and Wildlife web site.
