Arlington police say sex offender no longer a suspect in attack on girl
Arlington police now say convicted sex offender Fredrick A. Thurmond is not behind the attempted crime.
ARLINGTON -- Police have ruled out a convicted sex offender as the suspect in a recent attempted kidnapping in Arlington.
They initially accused Fredrick A. Thurmond, 24, but detectives no longer believe Thurmond is the man who tried to pull a 12-year-old girl into the woods on Sunday, they said Thursday.
The girl earlier told police that Thurmond resembled the man who attacked her, and he was ordered jailed after a court appearance. Subsequent investigation has led detectives to a different conclusion, according to a press release Thursday.
Thurmond remains jailed on an unrelated probation violation.
While police continue their investigation, they warn people to be careful when walking in the area, especially after dark.
The girl told police she was walking in the 18300 block of 31st Avenue NE late Sunday afternoon when a stranger grabbed her and tried to pull her into the woods. She managed to kick the man in the groin and run away, according to court records.
The girl described the man as having a medium build, some facial hair and acne scars on his face. She said he wore a black hoodie-style sweatshirt, white shoes and a single blue glove.
Police have increased patrols in the area, they said. They ask anyone with information about the case to call 360-403-3400.
Stay safe when walking after dark
Be visible. Wear clothing that can be seen by drivers.
Carry a flashlight.
Walk with a buddy.
Pay attention.
Don't use distracting electronic devices.
