Mariners sign Vargas, League, Kelley

SEATTLE — The Mariners avoided salary arbitration with three pitchers, agreeing to one-year deals with Jason Vargas, Brandon League and Shawn Kelley, the team announced Tuesday.

The 28-year-old League is coming off an All-Star season in which he recorded 37 saves in his first full year as a closer. He had a 2.79 earned-run average, pitched in a team-high 65 games, and his save total ranked third in the American League.

Vargas went 10-13 with a 4.25 ERA last season and established career highs in wins, strikeouts (131), innings (201) and starts (32). Kelley appeared in just 10 games last season after coming back from Tommy John surgery, and did not allow a run in 122⁄3 innings of work.

Vargas’ agency, CAA Sports, tweeted that the left-hander’s deal is worth $4.85 million. League will make $5 million, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. MLB.com’s Greg Johns reported Kelley will make $600,000, with another $50,000 possible in incentives.
