Portland-Vancouver bridge faces cost cuts
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Columbia River Crossing officials say building it in phases could cut about $650 million from the initial work, bringing the cost of a new Interstate 5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver to $2.45 billion.
Officials told an Oregon legislative committee Thursday the changes could reduce Oregon's contribution from $450 million to $300 million.
Project officials said they hope to build the project as planned, but in phases.
The Oregonian reported that Ore. Gov. John Kitzhaber called last summer for a look at possible revisions.
The savings in the first phase would come from delaying plans for most improvements to the Marine Drive interchange in Portland and three interchanges in Vancouver.
