Silvertips lose to Giants 4-3

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- The Everett Silvertips just can't put together a winning streak.

Everett was unable to follow up on Wednesday's success, falling 4-3 to the Vancouver Giants on Friday night.

The Tips were looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, following Wednesday's 3-2 victory at Kelowna.

But the short-handed Giants received two goals from Brett Kulak, and 15-year-old goaltender Payton Lee made 19 saves to earn the win in his Western Hockey League debut.

Riley Kieser and Anthony Ast also scored for the Giants (27-17-1-1), who ended a three-game losing skid despite playing without three key players. Leading scorer Brendan Gallagher, top defenseman David Musil and No. 1 goaltender Adam Morrison were all out with upper-body injuries.

Cody Fowlie scored twice to lead Everett (9-28-1-8). Kohl Bauml also scored for the Tips. Kent Simpson made 19 saves in net. All three of Everett's goals came on the power play.

The Tips found themselves in a 2-0 hole early. Kieser opened the scoring 8 minutes, 8 seconds into the game as he batted a rebound out of the air and past Simpson. The Giants made it 2-0 on the power play at 12:18, Kulak's slap shot from the point going through a screen and past Simpson.

But Everett was given a five-on-three power play late in the period, and the Tips scored twice to tie it up. Fowlie scored the first when he put home a rebound off the backboards at 16:46. Then, just 33 seconds later, Bauml scored in front on a feed from Jari Erricson to make it 2-2.

The Tips had a valiant kill of a long five-on-three early in the second period. But that only delayed things as the Giants scored twice to restore their two-goal lead. Vancouver regained the lead at 12:23 when Kiefer McNaughton's shot from the point deflected in off Ast. Then the Giants made it 4-2 on the power play at 16:50, Kulak getting his second of the game.

Vancouver salted away the third period until the Tips scored on the power play with 1:47 remaining, Fowlie one-timing a feed from Ryan Harrison past Lee. But that's all Everett could muster.
