Aaron Cupp resigned as Stanwood's football coach on Thursday after three years as the head coach of the Spartans.
Cupp, who had been teaching at Stanwood on non-continuing contracts for the past three years, found a permanent teaching position and a spot as the offensive coordinator for a high school in Texas and decided to take the job.
"We were looking for a permanent teaching position for Aaron, but due to the budget cuts we were never hiring," said Stanwood athletic director Tom Wilfong. "His hope was to find a permanent job and he found one."
Cupp was 8-22 over the three years as Stanwood's coach, including a disappointing 2-8 season this past fall. But Wilfong made it clear that had nothing to do with his resignation.
"(Aaron) was coming back as our football coach," Wilfong said. "That had nothing to do with the reason he's leaving."
Wilfong said he hopes to post the job opening early next week and wants to fill the position quickly. "There's been a lot of kids up at the weight room this winter and we want to keep things going for the kids."
