Prep girls basketball: Lake Stevens 62, Monroe 39
LAKE STEVENS -- Junior guard Brooke Pahukoa scored a season-high 24 points, including 10 in the first quarter, as the fourth-ranked Lake Stevens girls defeated Monroe 62-39 in Wesco North girls basketball game on Monday night.
The win was the second in a row for the Vikings since their 4-point loss last Wednesday at home to Stanwood.
"Brooke's play got us to a real quick start," said Lake Stevens coach Randall Edens, "she was just real aggressive in that first quarter."
Senior guard Katie Goddard scored 14 points for Lake Stevens.
"(Katie) played real solid defense the entire game," Edens said.
Lake Stevens, which had a six-point lead at the half, switched to man-to-man defense in the second half, taking control of the game as the Vikings outscored the Bearcats 36-19.
The victory for Lake Stevens keeps the Vikings in a tie for first place in the Wesco North with Stanwood. Both schools remain ranked in the top five in the Washington state high school girls standings.
Monroe was led by sophomore guard Jordyn Turner, who finished with eight points, including two 3-pointers.
