Seniors help Monroe boys upset Lake Stevens

MONROE -- Fittingly it was a group of seniors on Senior Night who helped Monroe upset Lake Stevens.

Seniors Carl Bunge and Terrance Day combined for 14 of Monroe 17 points in the first quarter as the Bearcats raced out to a 17-6 lead en route to a win over the Vikings. In the waning minutes, Bunge and Evan Turner, also a senior, each hit a pair of free throws to help secure the win.

"The seniors stepped up and played really well," said Monroe head coach Nick Wold.

Monroe also built its first-half lead behind solid work on the glass, something Wold said is a necessity against Lake Stevens. Tony Peloquin and senior Dakota Houmann each had eight rebounds to pace the Bearcats.

Vikings guard Devin Stoen scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half to spurn Lake Stevens comeback attempt.

The win puts Monroe in control of its own destiny in terms of wrapping up a district playoff berth. If the Bearcats beat Arlington on Thursday they will clinch a 4A District 1 playoff berth.
