Timeout with ... Anker Anderson, Archbishop Murphy boys basketball
Timeout with Anker Anderson, Archbishop Murphy boys basketball
Q: You just got out of the weight room, so we'll start there. How much can you bench?
A: I maxed out at 225 (pounds).
Q: Do you enjoy working out?
A: Yeah I like working out. I go to L.A. Fitness a lot in the summer.
Q: I just got a Shake Weight, if I use it every day will I ever be as buff as you? Make sure it's OK!
A: (Laughs.) I don't know. (Laughs again.) Those are pretty funny looking. It's kind of hard to imagine they work that well.
Q: I'll let you know.
A: (Laughs hardest.)
Q: How would you assess your basketball season so far?
A: It's been a lot of fun. I love everyone on the team. We all get along real well. Finally, everyone's back and we've been playing really well with everybody back and it's been a lot of fun.
Q: What's next after high school, for Anker Anderson?
A: I'm gonna go to Whitman College next year.
Q: Anker's a unique name, how'd you get it? Is there a meaning behind it?
A: Yeah. My great-great grandfather came here from Norway and he was thecaptain of the Clipper ship that sailed from Port Townsend to Shanghai. He set a world record for sailing. It was 26 days.
Q: Do you like it? Or do you wish you were like a John Anderson?
A: Well I was "Ben Anderson" until freshman year, cause Benjamin is my middle name. And then I just decided that high school would be a perfect time to go by "Anker." So it's worked. People always second guess it, you know, when I introduce myself. But, other than that, I love it.
Q: What about like Andrew Anderson? Or is that too much?
A: Andrew Anderson? Well, that's the name of Anker's son. They were both lost at sea together. My three best friends are actually named Andrew, so I don't know. I like the name, but-.
Q: When you're not playing basketball or at school what are you up to?
A: I like cars a lot. We're kind of a car family. I don't know.
Q: Don't have much free time?
A: Pretty much.
Q: We heard that you're ASB president, what's that like?
A: It's a lot of fun. It's a lot of work, but it's pretty rewarding to get to think of fun things and then put a lot of time and work into it. But when things get completed it's a lot of fun and rewarding.
Q: Do you have any political aspirations? Do you want to be the main president one day?
A: I don't think so. I've thought about it. But I don't really know if I'm that type of person. I don't think I'm arrogant enough. I hope not at least.
Q: What's your dream job?
A: I don't really know. I wanted to be an architect for a while but I'm not really sure. Maybe an enginieer of some sort.
Q: What's your favorite professional sports team?
A: Probably the Seattle Mariners.
Q: Are you a big baseball fan?
A: Not really. I'm more of a basketball fan, but since we don't have the Sonics.
Q: I'm actually not allowed to ask about the Sonics anymore. Like the first five of these I kept saying "did you miss the Sonics" and everybody said "yes." So I know how you feel.
A: (Laughs.) Yeah.
Q: Who do you think will win the Super Bowl?
A: I don't know. I don't really like Tom Brady that much so probably the Ravens. Or were the Ravens the team that just got knocked out?
Q: Yeah.
A: Okay. Well whoever's against Tom Brady.
Q: So you don't really care who wins the Super Bowl?
A: Not really.
Q: Do you have any cool Super Bowl plans? Like watching it somewhere? Or watch it at all?
A: I don't know. I usually watch it for the ads.
Q: If you didn't care what teams were in it, would you rather go to Game 7 of the World Series, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals or the Super Bowl?
A: Probably the NBA Finals. That'd be pretty fun.
Q: What are your hopes and dreams for 2012?
A: I don't really know. Just kind of enjoy life I guess. It's simple but I kind of go day-by-day.
Q: Do you have any goals for the basketball season?
A: I just want our team to go as far as we can. Winning state would be, you know, everything but I don't know.
Q: What's the best advice anyone's ever given you?
A: My aunt wrote me a letter one time and said "don't take yourself to seriously." That's always kind of stuck with me.
