Wilco sold out for a reason; hot O.A.R. continues climb
The latest video for the Chicago band Wilco is an animated cartoon. It features Popeye and Olive Oyl alongside Jeff Tweedy and his amazing rock band.
They're singing "Dawned on Me," a single from the latest Wilco album, the Grammy nominated, "The Whole Love."
Produced by King Features, the video is a blast. It's a riot seeing Wilco represented as cartoon characters interacting with Brutus and Wimpy.
But it doesn't take spinach to make Wilco great.
Their sound improves with lasting melodies, amazing guitar work and fantastic live performances.
(Check out the downloads available of their concerts at the band's website, wilcoworld.com).
This latest lineup, including guitar whiz Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone, now have put out three albums. They're all worth listening to.
It's been almost two years since Wilco last played Seattle. Let's hope it's not such a long wait next time.
Wilco is scheduled to play at 8 p.m. Tuesday at The Paramount, 911 Pine St., Seattle.
Tickets are $41.25. While the show is sold out, sometimes last-minute tickets become available. Check at stgpresent.org or call 877-784-4849.
O.A.R., Of a Revolution, is an American rock band from Maryland that started as a high school band about a decade ago, and today has earned a huge following on college campuses.
"King" is their seventh recording, and the first on Wind-Up Records. It debuted on the Billboard 200 and the concert tonight should feature several cuts off this fine piece of work.
Catch O.A.R. at 9 tonight at the Neptune Theatre, 1303 NE 45th St., Seattle.
Tickets are $29 in advance, $32 at the door. For tickets or more information, go to stgpresent.org or call 877-784-4849.
No band better defines brass-based funk, ryhthm-and-blues and soul like Tower of Power, the Oakland, Calif., act that's been pleasing audiences for more than four decades.
Tower of Power is pure energy that spills off the crowded stage -- the band has 10 guys -- and inspires audiences to get on their feet and boogie.
Time hasn't slowed these music makers in the least.
Tower of Power has sets at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Thursday through Feb. 12 at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave., Seattle.
Tickets are $40 at www.jazzalley.com or 206-441-9729.

His album "Acoustic Soul" includes the hits "Shine On," "Sitting in Limbo" and "Island Style," a songs that has become a Hawaiian anthem.
The guitarist is a Grammy winner and a frequent visitor to touring festivals around the country.
He's getting ready to release his third studio album this year.
Take a trip to the islands with an of Cruz's magical music.
