Seems Like Yesterday

50 years ago (1962)

Rex Swanson, electrical foreman at Weyerhaeuser's kraft pulp mill, was honored by fellow employees at a dinner marking his retirement. A veteran of almost 35 years, he had transferred to the mill when it was built. Informal talks about Swanson's career were given by John McEwen, L.G. Willins, Tom Firestone, Norm Rayner, Don McPhee, Jack Barker and John Holmquist.

Coach Paul Blowers called it their "game of the year" as his Everett Junior College Trojans trounced the University of Washington freshmen, 77-56. Men of Troy included Dave Merrick, Joe Henderson, John Weatherford, Bill O'Brien. Starting guards Mike Bauman and Tom Gish were out with leg and foot injuries.

25 years ago (1987)

Six Everett police officers were awarded advances in rank during a ceremony at City Hall. Promoted to captain were Ted Hazen and Dan Anderson. Robert Stiles advanced to the rank of lieutenant. Three new sergeants were Erling Egge, William Pyles and James Couture.

Martha Lake Elementary, pounded and beat up over the years, was heading to the beauty shop for $285,000 face lift and then opening temporarily. The plan was to operate it for two years. A new school was planned for the future.
