Portland snaps Tips' win streak
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Once again the Portland Winterhawks had too much firepower for the Everett Silvertips.
Portland put another seven goals past the Tips, defeating Everett 7-3 in Western Hockey League action Friday night.
It was the second time in 11 days that Portland scored seven goals against Everett. The Winterhawks won 7-4 when the teams met Jan. 24 in Portland.
Brendan Leipsic and Oliver Gabriel each scored twice for Portland (34-14-2-1), which was particularly lethal on the power play. The Winterhawks finished 3-for-4 with the advantage, and the only time Portland didn't convert is when the Winterhawks finished the game with 18 seconds worth of power-play time.
Troy Rutkowski, Cam Reid and Derrick Pouliot also scored for Portland, which has won 19 straight at home. Mac Carruth earned the win in goal with 29 saves.
Josh Birkholz, Ryan Murray and Reid Petryk scored for Everett (12-31-1-8), which was coming off its first back-to-back wins of the season. Austin Lotz made 24 saves in goal for the Tips.
A back-and-forth first period ended with the Tips trailing 3-2.
Everett opened the scoring 4 minutes, 29 seconds into the game, Birkholz spinning a shot from the high slot into the corner.
Portland countered as Leipsic twice scored on breakaways in a span of seven minutes to give the Winterhawks the lead.
Everett tied the game again at 13:36, Murray poking the puck in after his initial redirect got behind Carruth.
The Winterhawks regained the lead at 17:20, Rutkowski converting a Ty Rattie back-door feed.
Portland then got a game-changing goal just 19 seconds into the second period. Hard forechecking by Taylor Peters set up Gabriel in the slot as the Winterhawks went ahead 4-2.
Portland padded its lead on the power play at 12:24, Reid converting an open chance in the slot to make it 5-2.
The Winterhawks tacked on two more in the third, Pouliot and Gabriel each scoring on the power play.
