Open meetings

All panelists provided help

The recent community forum on open public meetings and civil behavior held at Heatherwood Middle School on Jan. 26, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County, provided citizens an understanding of the criteria for complying with the state Open Meetings Act.

The Everett School Board desired to provide time for the public, as well as board members, to listen to experts covering the OPMA's requirements, training, and ombudsman's services for citizens. This is to be appreciated. Also appreciated is The Herald's announcement of the meeting and follow-up coverage of the event. However, there was a significant omission in the listing of the expert panel in the second article.

In addition to attorneys Ramsey Ramerman and Tim Ford, two representatives from the Washington State School Directors' Association, Leadership Development Services Director Phil Gore and Leadership Specialist Colleen Miller, were on the panel. The information they shared about the formal training for new and ongoing school board directors was as valuable as the foundation presentations. The citizens benefited from all the panelists' presentations.
