'Lily's Crossing' a story of an unlikely friendship
Village Theatre's Pied Piper program presents a play for young people about a lonely young American girl who changes her outlook on life when she makes friends with a Hungarian refugee.
"Lily's Crossing," based on the book by Patricia Reilly Giff, plays for one performance only at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Everett Performing Arts Center.
The summer of 1944 is different for Lily Mollahan. She usually spends the summers at New York's Rockaway Beach with her father and grandmother. Her mother died when Lily was little.
But this summer is different. Her father has gone off to war and her friends have moved.
Facing a grim vacation, Lily befriends Albert and discovers the two have a bond despite their different backgrounds.
Giff has written many children's books and won a Newbery Medal in 1998 for "Lily's Crossing," which is recommended for ages 8 and up.
The Pied Piper program brings educational performances to students in the area. The plays are selected by the Village Theatre based on the recommendations of an advisory board of educators and parents.
Young people are invited to take part in preshow activities at the Everett Performing Arts Center one hour before the curtain.
