Silvertips top Victoria 3-2
VICTORIA, B.C. -- The Everett Silvertips are continuing to win the ones they need in order to get themselves back into the playoffs.
Everett won a crucial game in its drive to extend its playoff string, defeating the Victoria Royals 3-2 Tuesday night in a game between teams involved in a playoff race.
Four teams are racing for the final two playoff spots in the WHL's Western Conference: Everett, Victoria, Seattle and Prince George. Victoria went into Tuesday leading that race, with Everett in last.
But Everett's victory takes the Tips, who made the playoffs in each of their first eight seasons, off the bottom of the standings, passing the same Prince George team the Tips beat twice on the road two weekends earlier. And the Tips are now just five points behind Victoria with two games in hand.
The same two teams play again tonight in Victoria.
Ryan Harrison and Cody Fowlie both had a goal and an assist to lead Everett (13-31-1-8). Harrison's third-period goal stood up as the game winner.
Dominik Bittner also scored for the Tips, while Kent Simpson earned the win in goal with 29 saves. Everett also gave a WHL debut to 16-year-old forward Carson Stadnyk, who was called up to help cover for injuries and suspensions.
Ben Walker and Brandon Magee scored for Victoria (17-32-2-4), which staged a furious third-period comeback that came up just short. Keith Hamilton stopped 22 shots in net for the Royals.
The Tips controlled play in the first period and took the lead at 13 minutes, 48 seconds. A hard-working shift was finished off when Fowlie put in his own rebound, giving Everett a 1-0 lead.
Everett had plenty of chances to add to its lead in the second period, but it looked like the Tips were going to squander them. Everett couldn't even generate a scoring chance during a five-minute power play, and Trent Lofthouse had a shot ring off the inside of the post.
But just as Victoria was beginning to generate momentum late in the period, Everett struck. Bittner's shot from the left circle found it's way through traffic and past Hamilton to make it 2-0.
The Royals pulled within one early in the third, Walker scoring on his own rebound at 5:24 after a steal by Jamie Crooks.
Victoria was dominating play, but Everett scored with its first shot of the third period at 11:41, Harrison shooting past Hamilton off the rush to make it 3-1.
The Royals got a late power-play goal when Magee put in a rebound with Hamilton pulled for an extra attacker with 48 seconds remaining, but the Royals couldn't get the puck into the offensive zone for a last-ditch attempt to tie it.
