Prep girls basketball: Stanwood 61, Kamiak 38

STANWOOD -- The Stanwood girls defeated Kamiak 61-38 in the first round of the 4A District 1 Tournament.

After a slow first half by both teams, the Spartans opened up a lead and cruised to the win.

"In the fist half I thought both teams were a little nervous, as was reflected in the low score," said Stanwood head coach Dennis Kloke. "In the second half Stanwood was able to speed up the game and generate some turnovers."

According to Kloke, most of his team's offense in the first half came from Renee Lucero and Jade Borseth, with some of his taller players taking time to heat up.

"Our bigs, (Rachel) Swartz, (Paisley) Heckman and (Tristan) Murphy did not score in the first half."

Swartz, Heckman and Murpy combined for 15 points in the second half. The Knight's leading scorer was Marybeth Batie with 8.

Stanwood plays Jackson Friday at Arlington High School.
