The nonprofit is hosting a pet food drive on Saturday at the Safeway store located at 1258 State Ave. to benefit the Marysville Community Food Bank.
MARYSVILLE -- A nonprofit plans to help those who visit the Marysville Community Food Bank take care of their pets.
Scrub-A-Mutt, a nonprofit that raises funds for pet based charities, plans to host a Valentine's Pet Food Drive. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Safeway store at 1258 State Ave. Dog and cat food as well as cash donations will be collected during that time for the food bank.
Scrub-A-Mutt was founded by friends Jennifer Ward and Elizabeth Woche. The nonprofit held its first fundraiser dog wash in the city in 2008.
The nonprofit continues to be know for holding the annual summer dog wash. Throughout the past two years it has also collected about 3,000 pounds of pet food for the Marysville Community Food Bank and the Everett Animal Shelter.
"This is our second (fundraiser) for Valentine's Day," Ward said. "It's been really successful."
She and Woche learned about a need for pet food donations from Marysville Community Food Bank director Dell Deierling. He told them people at the food bank were asking for pet food. If pet food was unavailable, people often fed their animals some of the other donated food.
Pet food wasn't always in stock after he started his role at the food bank in April 2010, Deierling said. Pet food donations are now more consistent with the help of Scrub-A-Mutt.
"It's just been great what (Scrub-A-Mutt) has done for us," Deierling said. "It's a real delight to be able to have folks walk out of here having grabbed a bag of food to feed their pet and helping them keep their pet during a hard time."
The food bank could especially use donations of cat food and accepts donations of bags of food that have been opened, he added.
Everyone who makes a donation during Saturday's drive will be entered to win a Valentine theme dog gift basket worth more than $100, Ward said.
The fifth Scrub-A-Mutt dog washing event is scheduled for Aug. 18. More information about this year's event and about how to make a donation to Scrub-A-Mutt is online at www.scrub-a-mutt.org.
