Silvertips complete two-game sweep, beat Royals 3-2
VICTORIA, B.C. -- For the second time in two weeks the Everett Silvertips were facing a huge two-game road set against one of the teams they're battling for a playoff spot. And for the second time the Tips pulled off a crucial sweep.
Everett completed a two-game sweep of the Victoria Royals, winning 3-2 Wednesday night. It was the second straight night Everett won 3-2.
Ryan Harrison scored twice for Everett, which swept a big doubleheader at Prince George two weekends earlier. Harrison's second goal was the game winner as he scored the winning goal in both games against the Royals.
Ryan Chynoweth also scored for Everett (14-31-1-8), which pulled within three points of Victoria for seventh in the Western Conference. The Tips remained three points out of the eighth and final playoff position as Seattle also won Wednesday.
Kent Simpson played a strong game in goal for the Tips, making 29 saves. He made several crucial stops late in the game as the Tips clung to their one-goal lead. Simpson has now won four straight starts.
Jamie Crooks and Dakota Conroy scored for Victoria (17-33-2-4). Keith Hamilton stopped 26 shots in net for the Royals.
The score was tied 2-2 midway through the third period after Conroy knotted it at 2-2 early in the third. But Harrison, who had also hit two posts in addition to his first goal, beat Hamilton up high with a shot off the rush, giving Everett its 3-2 lead with 8 minutes, 23 seconds remaining. Simpson then made sure the lead held up as he stopped 17 shots in the third period alone.
Everett had the edge in play in the first period, outshooting Victoria 12-5, but the Tips couldn't find the net and the period ended scoreless. Everett's best scoring chance came when Harrison put a rebound off the post.
Victoria then opened the scoring with a power-play goal 2:16 into the second as Crooks put in a rebound just moments after Harrison put a short-handed breakaway off the post.
But the Tips rallied and took the lead into the third. Harrison found the net this time, tapping in Kohl Bauml's one-touch feed at 8:05 to tie it. Then Everett took the lead at 14:59, Chynoweth tucking the puck in at the post after he redirected Ryan Murray's shot off the endboards.
