Fishing: Pick of the week
Fish Lake, north of Highway 2 near Lake Wenatchee, is one of our state's more consistent winter ice-fishing venues. Peter Flohr at Hooked On Toys in Wenatchee (509-663-0740) said hardy anglers have been scoring well there the past few weeks on a mix of perch and rainbow. The trout are running 12 to 14 inches, with the occasional big triploid prepared to cause trouble.
Flohr suggests using a Swedish Pimple or one of the new Lindy Slick Jig models in rainbow or green glow colors.
"The new one doesn't just jig up and down," Flohr said. "When you let it fall, it swims to the side -- a much more attractive action."
If you're not getting bit, he said, keep moving. Perch especially are a school fish, and finding them is the key. If you don't have an augur, he said, "Take a spud or old hatchet to clean out existing holes, or find somebody with an augur and give 'em a beer or a couple of bucks gas money to drill one for you."
As always, ice conditions can change quickly. Err on the side of caution and make sure you have solid ice beneath your feet.
