Prep girls basketball: Shorecrest 49, Everett 42
SHORELINE -- Paced by the play of Bri Lasconia and Janie Uppinghouse, Shorecrest beat Everett 49-42 Thursday night to advance to the semifinals of the 3A District 1 girls basketball tournament.
Lasconia and Uppinghouse each finished with 15 points, but it was the shooting of Uppinghouse that helped the Scots maintain their lead, according to Scots head coach Dori Monson.
After running out to an early 8-0 lead to start the first quarter, Everett was able to pull within five points at the half. But Uppinghouse hit two of her four 3-pointers early in the third quarter to put Shorecrest up for good.
"(Uppinghouse) has been a good 3-point shooter her entire career," Monson said. "She has this deadly rhythm at times where she seemingly can't miss, and that's what she had tonight."
The two teams played just 10 days prior -- a game that also ended in Shorecrest's favor -- and although the score was slightly different, the defensive strategy was the same.
"Sidney (Rielly) was our defensive focus tonight. We were ready to bring the intensity to her," Monson said of Everett's leading scorer.
Along with the play of Lasconia and Upppinghouse, Shorecrest's sophomore guard Onyie Chibuogwu finished with six rebounds to go along with her 12 points. Lasconia also finished with five rebounds and five assists.
With the victory, Shorecrest advances to host Meadowdale Saturday at 4 p.m. at Shorecrest for a chance to advance to the district title game.
