Wesco girls dominate Round One of 3A District 1 tourney

Thursday night the first step was taken for four local teams as they looked to make their way to the state tournament. Meadowdale, Shorecrest, Glacier Peak and Lynnwood all won their first round games, and advanced to the semifinals of the girls 3A District 1 tournament.

I covered Glacier Peak's 65-52 victory over Ferndale, which featured 27 points by star guard Katie Hawkins. The Grizzlies rotation – 10 different players hit the floor for Glacier Peak – just outran the Golden Eagles. By the end of the game Ferndale looked worn out, just tossing the ball in the air toward the hoop and hoping it was close.

On Monday The Herald prep writers (as well as our kind, caring, generous and understanding boss Prep Editor Aaron Swaney) filled out brackets and made predictions for all district tournaments, including the 3A girls. The winner gets…well…bragging rights. So far, I am a perfect 4-for-4 in this tournament. Unfortunately, so is everybody else.

In order for me to be successful in this bracket (which I know, is everyone's main concern) Lynnwood needs to win the district championship, and Glacier Peak needs to weave through the consolation bracket and take the district's second state berth. So far, my predictions look pretty darn good.

We all expected Wesco to fare well at the tournament, and in the first round it didn't disappoint. Lynnwood, the No. 1 seed, took care of Shorewood, although it needed overtime to do so. The Grizzlies dispatched Ferndale, which saw all of its Lockers graduate last year. Shorecrest edged out Everett. And Meadowdale, the district's No. 6 seed, “upset” No. 3 Mount Vernon at Mount Vernon High School with the biggest point differential of all four games: 17.

This seems like a good time to point out that in my preview Meadowdale was my "Dark Horse.” See! I do know something!

More importantly, it shows that local teams north of the Metro leagues of Seattle are playing good basketball. After seeing Thursday's game (and all of the results) I still like my predictions for the tournament. However, it's far from over. And the four teams that lost tonight are by no means out of it.

In this district, the loser of the district championship game has to play the winner of the consolation bracket. The consolation bracket team plays two more games than the loser of the district championship, but if a team like Everett catches fire (or, perhaps Glacier Peak who I predicted to lose in a close game to Lynnwood in the semifinals and now find myself questioning that choice a little) it could easily make a run for state.

The moral of the story is the district tournament is just getting started, and it should be an exciting ride.

The second moral of the story is I really, really hope my district brackets turn out better than those of Swaney and Herald Writers Aaron Lommers and Jon Saperstein. I get made fun of enough at the office as it is.
