Driftwood Players promise a realistic take on 'M*A*S*H'
"M*A*S*H": Director Jonathan Reis said this Driftwood Players production of life in a mobile army surgical hospital unit during the Korean War is truly action-packed.
Reis said there's something going on in every tent on stage. There are helicopters hovering. And the audience will be ducking artillery fire.
The show is a sound and tech fantasy, but for the audience, it will feel like war.
"I'm constantly making things better and better and trying to bring the more realistic parts out," Reis said. "I think it's going to be so cool, so incredible."
This production will have all the beloved M*A*S*H characters we hold dear to our hearts, and they will make us laugh just like they used to: Houlihan, Maj. Burns, Radar and, of course, Hawkeye.
"Hawkeye … he's great he's fantastic," Reis said of actor Garr Godfrey. "He plays him beautifully -- his personality is that guy."
But the audience must keep in mind that this M*A*S*H is based on the book, not the television series, Reis cautioned.
Still, it's a mixture of serious medical emergencies during war blended with a wacky, after-hours madness.
And there's lots that will be familiar.
The audience will recognize the theme song, "Suicide is Painless" and will relate to the "three-ring circus" atmosphere reminiscent from the M*A*S*H sit-com, Reis said.
Reis said his actors really bring a tribute to the mobile hospital unit.
"It's really showing the seriousness about the unit, about what that they had to do to survive but also the release," Reis said. "Hawkeye and Duke, they come in and make a big difference. They stir up so much trouble and bring a lot of life to this show."
M*A*S*H opens at 8 tonight at Driftwood Players, 950 Main St., Edmonds. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Feb. 26. Tickets are $23 and $20. Call 425-774-9600 or online at www.driftwoodplayers.com.
"Audition for Murder": This comedy presented by Reunion Theatre Group and written by two local playwrights is a traditional murder mystery in the sense that it has a cast of odd characters and a murder or two and makes no attempt to be "significant art," said director Keith McGregor.
McGregor teamed up with playwright Howard Voland to write this comedy based on the premise that Grace Sharp, a retired English teacher, and Doris Brooks, a retired nurse, have an accident on a deserted stretch of icy road.
Shaken up, but not hurt, they seek help at an isolated Grange Hall that has been converted into a community theater.
They happen to arrive just in time for auditions and for a light-hearted evening of high jinks -- and murders -- to begin, McGregor said.
McGregor and Voland are longtime Snohomish County residents who live in the Maltby area.
"Audition for Murder" opens at 8 tonight at Everett Music Hall, in the Everett Mall, 1402 Everett Mall Way, Everett. Shows are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Feb. 25.
Tickets are $13 and $10. Call 800-838-3006 or online at www.brownpapertickets.com or make a reservation at www.reuniontheatregroup.org.
"Steel Magnolias": Whidbey Island Center for the Arts opens the 2012 season with this touching off-Broadway comedy-drama about six women whose lives unfold in the setting of a beauty parlor in Louisiana.
The dialogue is laced with Southern phrases and wit as the characters spar in lively repartee.
"Steel Magnolias" opens at 7:30 tonight at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, 565 Camano Ave., Langley. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Feb. 25.
