Ideas to make the most of your weekend
Gardening inspiration: The Northwest Flower & Garden show runs through Sunday in Seattle. The event features more than 20 display gardens -- all certain to make you want to get outside and play in the dirt. There will also be vendors and a selection of speakers and classes throughout the weekend. You can find details in our story here. Also, take a look at a recap of a preview tour, along with a photo gallery here.
Taste wine and chocolate: Locally made chocolate, may we introduce you to locally crafted wine? For this year's Red Wine & Chocolate Tour on Whidbey Island, two local chocolate makers created specialty truffles infused with Whidbey Island-made wines. The treats are the highlight of the tasting tour this Saturday and Sunday and Feb. 18-19 as well. Visitors who buy a ticket are welcome to visit six wineries on Whidbey, sampling the vintages and snacking on special treats, including the chocolates. Find all the details in our story here.
See a unique movie: The Everett Film Festival kicks off tonight and runs through Saturday afternoon. This year's selection of films is a bold combination of documentary, quirky love story and dramatic feature, with a smidge of animation thrown in. In addition to the selection of unique films, there will also be a showing of 13 short films as part of the “Experience Everett Film Project.” Those shorts sprang from a filmmaking competition in which budding videographers were asked to create a three-minute video extolling the city of Everett's best features. Read more about it in our story here.
Let the kids garden: Kids can make Valentine's Day pots at 11 a.m. on Saturday at The Plant Farm, 15022 Twin Lakes Ave., Marysville. Registration is required online at www.ThePlantFarm.com/kidsclub.htm or call 360-652-3351. The cost is $5 per child.
Catch some hockey: The championship game of the Pac-8 Hockey Conference championship tournament is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Saturday at Olympic View Ice Arena in Mountlake Terrace. The tournament features club teams from Washington, Utah, USC and UCLA.
Learn about birds: The Great Backyard Bird Count is coming up soon. If you're interested, you can learn tricks to help make the count more accurate on Saturday in Edmonds. NOAA scientist Dr. Alan Mearns will talk about becoming a citizen-scientist for Cornell Lab of Ornithology and how to take the counts. You can find details in our story here.
Indulge a hobby: The Northwest Model Hobby Expo is today through Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. One of the highlights of the event is the Indoor Fun Fly. Fly your model plane or, for newbies, give it a try with a little help. Along with the Fun Fly event, visitors can watch simulated tank battles, model sailboat races, remote control cars and battling robots, which battle only on Saturday. Find details in our story here.
Listen: The Everett Philharmonic will celebrate Valentine's Day with a little love from Mozart on Sunday. Find the details about the performance in our story here.
