Work begins on water leak in Edmonds; will continue next week

EDMONDS -- Crews have started work on a water leak near the fountain at Fifth and Main streets today. Work will continue into next week.

Public Works had previously identified a water leak at Third and Main.

"The good news is that the (Fifth and Main) leak does not appear to be directly under the fountain," said Phil Williams, director of the city's public works department.

A plan is in place to dig up the street 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Opening up the street on a Friday could cause unnecessary overtime, if more than a single day of work becomes necessary. It also eliminates the potential of exposing an eyesore over the weekend.

"Hopefully the source of the leak can be exposed quickly and repaired with a temporary asphalt patch," Williams said. "We can then schedule a more permanent repair of the decorative concrete pattern."

The delay in action will also give city officials the time needed to develop a plan for traffic.
