Judge shuts down Bremerton shooting range

BREMERTON -- A judge has ordered a cease fire at a shooting range near Bremerton until it complies with all county land-use requirements.

Neighbors have complained that rapid gunfire from the Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club exposed residents to the sounds of war and that booming from explosive targets can be heard up to two miles away.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Susan Serko signed an injunction Thursday declaring that expansions at the gun range over the past decade have turned it into a public nuisance.

The Kitsap Sun reports the lawyer for the gun range is considering whether to appeal. The deputy prosecutor says the county does not intend to shut down the range permanently. Planners will work with the range to bring it into zoning conformance.
