Wash., B.C. to conduct earthquake readiness exercises

OLYMPIA -- Gov. Chris Gregoire and B.C. Premier Christy Clark have signed an agreement to conduct a cross-border earthquake readiness exercise.

They signed the agreement at the Capitol on Friday during a visit from Clark and several members of her Cabinet.

Gregoire said that the cross-border neighbors need to "ready ourselves for a catastrophic earthquake or even a minor earthquake." Gregoire said they may also ask Alaska to participate.

The state's top emergency management leader, Maj. Gen. Timothy Lowenberg, says that the first exercise would take place June 5 and 6, with other events in June and August.

He says that Gregoire and Clark and other heads of state will engage in regional coordination on earthquake response.
