Silvertips miss out on chance to gain ground in playoff race

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- The Everett Silvertips were unable to make up ground Friday night.

Everett had an opportunity to move even closer to a playoff position, but the Tips fell short, losing 3-2 to the Vancouver Giants in Western Hockey League action.

The Tips began the night three points behind Seattle and Victoria, the two teams that occupy the Western Conference's final two playoff spots. Seattle lost to Spokane and Victoria was idle. But the Tips couldn't take advantage.

Brendan Gallagher, Neil Manning and Cain Fanson scored for Vancouver (32-20-1-2), which scored three straight after Everett opened the scoring early in the game.

Adam Morrison earned the win in goal for the Giants, making 21 saves.

Jari Erricson and Reid Petryk scored for Everett (14-32-1-8), which was unable to put together its first three-game winning streak of the season. Kent Simpson stopped 28 shots in goal for the Tips.

The same two teams play tonight in Everett.

Everett opened the scoring 12 minutes, 23 seconds into the game. Erricson cleaned things up in front after Josh Birkholz's backhander was saved, giving the Tips a 1-0 lead.

But Vancouver came right back to turn the tide. Gallagher tied the game at 13:27 when his shot off the rush beat Simpson to the far post. Then the Giants took the lead on the power play at 16:37, Manning lifting a backhander from the high slot over a downed Simpson to make it 2-1.

The Giants increased their lead to two 6:08 into the second period. Franson had plenty of time to line up his shot from the slot as he made it 3-1.

The Tips were unable to generate much offensively in the third period, but Everett did pull within one with less than a minute remaining. With Simpson pulled for an extra attacker, Petryk was able to scramble the puck in with 31 seconds remaining. The Tips had a brief chance to tie it, but were unable to get the puck established in the offensive zone.
