Lake Stevens girls beat Snohomish, clinch state berth

ARLINGTON -- When coaches put together instructional videos they often include a montage of every way that a basketball player can score.
Lake Stevens girls basketball coach Randall Edens may be able to put together just such a clip reel using only plays from his Vikings in the first half of their 61-37 victory over Snohomish in the district semifinal Friday night.
"Our kids were great on offense in the first half," Edens said. "Certainly our best half of the year.

Acrobatic, driving the lane scoop shot from Brooke Pahukoa. Check.
"We haven't executed like that," Edens said. "It's nice to do that at this juncture."
It couldn't be a better time to be hitting on all cylinders as the Vikings advance to the state regional with the victory, but first they seek their third-consecutive district crown in the finals next Friday.
"That's our ultimate goal to come out with another win," Pahukoa said. "The third title in a row."
Pahukoa, a junior, topped the team with 18 points along with senior Katie Goddard who realizes how special it would be to get another district crown and the first seed into the state regionals.
"It's crazy to be back (in the finals) because our league is always so tough," Goddard said.
The Vikings outrebounded Snohomish 42-31 led by nine from Brooke's twin Brittney and eight from Molstre who also added 13 points. The trio of double-digit Viking scorers made it look like they couldn't miss even though they did on occasion.
"I missed a pull up," Goddard lamented," But I didn't let that phase me."
Couple the offense with a quick, anticipatory defense that creates deflections and prevents good shot attempts and you have a recipe for a mismatch.
The Panthers started disciplined shooting but nothing fell and Lake was up 7-0. Before the Panthers fans could all take their seats in the Arlington gym the game was 16-2 and all but over.
"We executed pretty good on offense for awhile, " Snohomish coach Ken Roberts said. "As we didn't score…you start to panic. Against a team like that it makes it tough."
Snohomish's leading scorer Julia Young got shook up with a bloody nose in the first half, but had a forgettable game. She shot 0-for-7 from the floor and finished with two points. Callie Harwood was the lone bright spot for Snohomish with 10 points.
The Panthers loss sends them into a loser-out contest Tuesday night at Arlington. The two teams split the regular season series with each team taking the game at home.
"They are a very good team," Roberts said. "It should be a very good game."
