TALKING POINTS
That was some old school Everett vs. Vancouver, reminiscent of the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons when every game between these two teams resulted in fireworks. Friday night's game in Vancouver was ill-tempered, and after Vancouver's Brendan Gallagher blew kisses to the Tips bench following Friday's game, tonight's rematch was even more heated. The only thing missing was Jeff Harvey calling Pacific Coliseum a library (thanks to Zoran Rajcic for reminding me of that one).
This was a gutsy effort by the Tips. Everett played much of the game down two defensemen as both Evan Morden and Nick Walters left the game in the first period because of injuries -- Morden limped off, while Walters took a puck to the face that required 23 stitches. Also, Josh Caron spent much of the first 35 minutes of the game in the penalty box. Fortunately for the Tips they dressed seven d-men tonight, or else both Ryan Murray and Dominik Bittner would be unable to walk Sunday because of the amount of ice time they logged.
For a while it looked like the game was going to follow a similar script to Friday as Everett opened the scoring, only for the Giants to score twice to take the lead. But this time the Tips took advantage of their power plays and regained the lead. Then in the third period play flowed one way as Everett was gassed. But the Tips received quality goaltending from Kent Simpson and some good clearing of rebounds to hold onto their lead.
And with that, Everett finds playoff position within its grasp. The Tips have won five of seven, and with Seattle losing Saturday and Victoria idle, Everett is now just one point behind the T-birds and Royals. Everett and Victoria have both played 56 games, Seattle has played 55.
TURNING POINT
Vancouver had just taken the lead and had momentum when, midway through the second period, the Giants' David Musil took a four-minute penalty for high sticking just 14 seconds into an Everett power play. The Tips scored just after the five-on-three expired, then scored again just after the five-on-four expired, regaining the lead.
HIT OF THE DAY
Caron turned into a human wrecking ball in the third period with several monster hits. The biggest came early in the period when he laid out Nathan Burns with an open-ice hit.
THREE STARS
First star: Simpson. 41 saves. That's five wins in six starts for Simpson, who happened to get hot in the second half last season, too.
Second star: Gallagher. Two assists, he may be an irritant, but he's a heck of a player.
Third star: Cody Fowlie, Everett. One goal and one assist, had a solid game.
The Herald's honorable mention: Jari Erricson, Everett. Was at the center of both the goals that turned the game back Everett's way. All those Tips d-men deserve mention, too.
BOX SCORE
Everett 4, Vancouver 2
