Same-sex marriage

Real leadership makes the tough calls

The letter, "Shin seeks respect? Well, so do others," is the latest contributor in the homosexuality/same-gender marriage kerfluffle.

A few quick points:

1) Seriously, should we use the writer's "tolerance" of Sen. Shin's decision as our example? What cheek to think he can tell folks of other belief systems what is right and wrong! He thinks "religious people" are intolerant? Really?

2) What Sen. Shin understands, and what the writer and the majority of Washington legislators do not, is that leadership is not simply giving everybody what they want, ask for, demand, or call you names in order to obtain. True leadership -- of a state, a company or a family -- makes tough calls based on principles and does not cave in just to avoid an argument.

3) The state did not define marriage in the first place. Therefore, the state does not have the authority to re-define it. The one who defined marriage does not answer to the state government.
