3A Girls District Tournament: Shorecrest 42, Meadowdale 39
SHORELINE -- Two weeks ago Shorecrest head coach Dori Monson watched helplessly as Meadowdale's Margreet Barhoum dropped 32 points on his team in a lopsided, upset victory for the Mavs, so he knew his team would have to contain the Meadowdale star if it wanted to win Saturday's 4A District 1 tournament girls basketball game.
Consider it done. Shorecrest held Barhoum to just three field goals and 15 points in a 42-39 victory to advance to the tournament's championship game, where the Scots will face the winner of tonight's Lynnwood-Glacier Peak game next Saturday.
"We did a good job of mixing man and zone defenses and always being aware of where Margreet is at at all times," Monson said.
Meadowdale had the ball and trailed Shorecrest by two with 25 seconds to play, but Shorecrest forced the Mavs into a poor shot and controlled the rebound to wrap up the game.
Bri Lasconia scored 14 points and Onyie Chibuogwu grabbed 12 rebounds, nine of them on the offensive end, to lead Shorecrest to the win.
Monson also pointed to the play of Mickey Greenburg, who was so nauseaus before the game she wasn't sure if she'd be able to play, as a key to Shorecrest's defensive pressure. "She's our quarterback in our zone defense," Monson said. "She was huge for us. I needed her for almost the entire game and she stepped up and was the difference."
Trailing by two at halftime, Shorecrest changed up its defense and outscored Meadowdale 13-8 in a key third quarter to gain the advantage. Lasconia scored six of her 14 points in the third quarter.
