Emotions got best of Silvertips' Yadlowski
Everett defenseman is sorry for his actions, which led to a 10-game suspension by the WHL
EVERETT -- Brennan Yadlowski has expressed remorse for the actions that led to his lengthy suspension.
The Everett Silvertips' overage defenseman was handed a 10-game suspension by the WHL after he barged into the Portland Winterhawks' locker room following the teams' game Feb. 3 at Portland's Memorial Coliseum.
"I let my emotions get the best of me, really," Yadlowski said following Saturday night's 4-2 victory over Vancouver. "I'm really sorry for what I did, especially to my teammates because I'd like to be helping them make the playoffs right now. But also to my coaches and the fans, too. It's not a good role model and I'm sorry for what I did."
On the night of Feb. 3, Portland was winning 7-3 with less than a minute remaining when a fight broke out between Yadlowski and Portland's Jason Trott. When the fight was over Yadlowski was bleeding profusely from the bridge of his nose and was visibly irate, needing to be restrained by the officials as he was ushered off the ice. Trott was given an instigator penalty on the play.
After Yadlowski left the ice, he returned to Everett's locker room, removed his skates, then went to Portland's locker room to confront Trott. Those were the actions that prompted the league to come down hard on Yadlowski.
"He just jumped me for no reason," Yadlowski said about Trott. "He got three or four shots in before my gloves were even off. I was mad and I let my anger take over.
"I don't think (Trott) got what he deserved for what he did to me, but that's not my business."
The 10-game suspension matched the longest received by an Everett player this season. Winger Jesse Mychan, since traded to Tri-City, was given a 10-game suspension for a checking-to-the-head major penalty against the Prince George Cougars on Nov. 12.
The suspension was handed down when Everett had 20 games remaining in its season. Therefore, the Tips are without one of their key defensemen for half the run-in as they try to secure a playoff spot. Everett has won five of its past seven games to move within one point of playoff position.
"I'm just really disappointed I can't help the guys," Yadlowski said. "They're playing good hockey right now, that's a plus. I just can't wait to get back and help make the playoffs."
Yadlowski has served four games of the suspension. He'll be eligible again when the Tips play host to Kamloops on Feb. 29. Everett is 3-1 without Yadlowski so far.
Everett has six games remaining against Seattle and Victoria, the two teams that are one point ahead of the Tips. Yadlowski will miss just one of those six games.
