2A Boys District 1 Tournament: Sehome 42, Archbishop Murphy 40

MOUNT VERNON -- After falling behind late in third quarter, Archbishop Murphy spent nearly the entire fourth quarter scratching and clawing to get even.

Once they did it was short-lived.

Just seconds after the Wildcats' Dan Haider hit a layin to draw Murphy even with Sehome at 40 with 9 seconds to play, Sehome's Gabe Sanchez hit a 12-foot jump shot as time expired to give the Mariners a 42-40 win over Murphy in a loser-out 2A boys basketball District 1 tournament game on Tuesday night at Skagit Valley College.

Haider led all scoters with 16 points and teammate Zach Gordon had six points, 15 rebounds and six blocks to pace the Wildcats.

Sehome jumped out to a 5-0 lead and kept Murphy off the scoreboard for nearly the first 5 minutes of the game. But the Wildcats out scored Sehome 9-5 to end the quarter, including a three-point play by Gordon to draw to within a point at the end if the first quarter.

A key point in the game came late in the third quarter. Trailing by a point, Archbishop Murphy had four shots at taking its first lead of the game, but five missed shots and a turnover on three separate possessions stymied the Wildcats.

Sehome then hit a jumper and, after another turnover by Archbishop Murphy, got a foul and then a technical foul called on the Wildcats to build its lead to 35-29 going into the fourth quarter.
