State seeks guidance on 2012 political maps

OLYMPIA -- Washington election officials are asking the state Supreme Court to approve redistricting boundaries for this year, even as justices weigh a larger challenge to the new maps.

The Secretary of State's Office filed a request Wednesday asking that the redistricting plan approved by a bipartisan commission and lawmakers be used for the 2012 elections. Officials say there are deadlines that election organizers need to meet in order to administer the election. They suggest that any changes that might be made take effect after the election.

A Vancouver man has asked the Supreme Court to toss the new maps, arguing that the commission's plan was drawn for the benefit of incumbent lawmakers and political parties. The Legislature approved the plan with broad support.
