Bartley to coach Murphy's boys soccer team
Ready to coach high school boys soccer again, Michael Bartley found the perfect job.
Archbishop Murphy announced on Wednesday that Bartley has been hired as the school's newest boys soccer coach and will take over the reins from Eddie Fernandez, who resigned last June. Bartley's son, Josh, is a junior on the Archbishop Murphy boys soccer team, and Bartley said it was a factor in his decision.
Bartley, who has coached soccer for more than 31 years, will remain the girls soccer coach at Jackson. He coached the Jackson boys soccer team until 2004, when he resigned because he was coaching his son's select soccer team. Bartley said he was intrigued by the Archbishop Murphy position and that the timing was right because the select soccer team he was coaching recently disbanded.
"I'm very excited to coach at Murphy," Bartley said. "I've always admired Murphy and I thought it was better to coach with them instead of battling against them."
Bartley said it's too early to diagnosis the talent on this year's team, but he said he sees a lot of potential on a team that won its conference last season and went to state.
During his coaching career, which included stints at Meadowdale (1997-2002) and Eastside Catholic (1986-1993) Bartley was named The Herald All-Area Coach of the Year, Metro All-Area Coach of the Year, and The Enterprise All-Area Coach of the Year.
Archbishop Murphy also hired an athletic director on Wednesday, tabbing Jerry Zander for the job. Zander, who has served as interim athletic director since Rick Stubrud's contract was not renewed earlier this year, has 12 years of high school coaching experience in football, basketball, volleyball and track and field, and was co-athletic director at Archbishop Murphy in 2007-08. Zander started teaching mathematics at Murphy when the school opened in 1998 and spent three years at Salpointe Catholic H.S. in Tucson, Ariz.
