An independent challenger for Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe

Democratic State Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe has an independent challenger.
He’s Guy Palumbo, a small-business owner from the Woodinville area who owns and operates a pet-boarding facility.
McAuliffe, Palumbo and Republican Brian Travis have registered as candidates for senator from the 1st Legislative District, which now will include Brier, Bothell, most of Mountlake Terrace, Woodinville, part of Kirkland, unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland and unincorporated areas of Snohomish County east of Bothell.
The three have registered with the State Public Disclosure Commission, a step that allows them to raise and spend money for the August primary and November general election.
Palumbo already has raised $21,450, including 10 contributors who have made maximum contributions of $800 both for the primary and the general election. That compares to the $4,350 that McAuliffe has raised and no fundraising for Travis.
Democratic 1st District Reps. Luis Moscoso and Derek Stanford have no announced opponents.
Candidates file for ballot positions May 14-18.
Palumbo said last week that he chose to run for the Senate rather than the House because he can have more effect in the Senate.
He said that he is running as an independent because he is fiscally conservative and socially liberal.
He lists these priorities:
1) Focusing on small businesses to promote job growth and economic development.

2) Funding and reforming our educational system so that our children will be able to meet the needs of the 21st century economy.

3) Treating state government like a business to make it more efficient and a better steward of our tax dollars.
