Army accuses private of $630K in equipment theft
JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCHORD -- The Army has charged a 22-year-old soldier with stealing $630,000 worth of military equipment from Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The News Tribune reports the Army has not said whether they believe Pvt. Nicholas Solt of Slatington, Pa., acted alone.
If convicted of all the charges against him, he faces up to 59 years of confinement, as well a dishonorable discharge. Solt joined the Army in June 2008 and trained as an infantryman at Fort Benning, Ga. He has been at Joint Base Lewis-McChord since October 2008 and was deployed to Iraq from September 2009 to September 2010.
The Army says it has recovered most of the equipment taken, with help from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The gear includes rifle scopes, laser sights and night vision goggles.
