Inmates indicted in attack on federal prison guard
SEATTLE -- Two inmates at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac have been indicted in a metal-pipe attack that left a corrections officer with severe skull fractures.
Sabir Shabazz and Roy Fritts are charged with conspiracy to murder a federal officer and assault in the indictment returned Wednesday in U.S. District Court. They could face up to life in prison.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce Miyake says its not clear why the pair targeted the officer in the Jan. 3 attack. According to the indictment, they had been planning it since early December.
Shabazz, who was facing sex trafficking charges, is accused of hitting the officer with a pipe unscrewed from the sink in his cell. Prosecutors say Fritts was serving time for carjacking, and he stood over the officer armed with a shank.
Miyake says the officer underwent surgery for skull fractures and still has not returned to work.
