Second City brings its improvisational comedy to Edmonds on Saturday
Sketch comedy and improvisational acts sometimes miss the mark. But when comedians click with the audience, the laughs can be tremendous.
"When it's great, it can be really awesome," said Chris Witaske, 28, of Chicago.
Witaske is part of Second City's touring company, "Laugh Out Loud." The show returns to Edmonds Center for the Arts on Saturday.
Second City is the Chicago-based improvisational comedy school that boasts a roster of famous alumni including John Candy, Martin Short, Jane Lynch, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell.
It was a group of Second City grads who in the 1970s starred in a new NBC-TV show, "Saturday Night Live." The actors were John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.
Witaske and the four other Second City-trained comedians in his traveling troupe aim to join the list of the famous.
"We're all hoping to be rich someday," Witaske joked.
The show is two acts full of classic sketches and lots of improv, he said.
People in the audience suggest settings, props and situations that the five comedians transform into a hopefully hilarious skit.
"It's made up before their very eyes," Witaske said.
No one in the audience should be concerned that they'll be called upon to provide laughs.
"No one should worry," the comedian said. "We don't expect anyone in the audience to be funny."
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N., Edmonds.
Tickets are $35 to $40 for adults, $15 for youth at ec4arts.org or 425-275-9595.
